Plastic is an increasing problem for the marine environment.
Not only is it an eyesore, it is killing the wildlife that inhabit the waterways.

Note the contents of these Albatross’ stomachs.
The following links describe an enormous mass of floating garbage in the Pacific.

Glad to find your site. Could banning plastics happen here? I for one find plastic bags along the causeway and pick themup along the way. Does anyone else care?

Hi Leah,
Great to hear from you! Many Americans are so self centered I don’t think it’s likely. Add to that the commercial forces pushing the political buttons and it looks extremely unlikely. Bio-degradable plastic is now available but of coarse it costs more. Maybe if enough of us champion the cause we can get americans to spend a few pennies extra for the convenience of using plastic products.

I can well imagine that the stories are true, but don’t be too quick to blame America. I spent a couple years in Japan in the 70s and was shocked to see huge barges of garbage going out to sea every day from all of their ports. They have no land fills and so the ocean serves as their dump. I don’t know of any city in the US that uses the ocean as a dump. If there is a continent of trash out there, I hope someone like Green Peace or the Sea Shepherds will one day map it.

I try not to think of things as “we versus them” but merely to point out areas in need of improvement worldwide. This one is truly a world issue as plastics are used everywhere. Hopefully we are making progress.
I knew of a campground back in the 80’s that still pumped sewage into Clark Hill lake
(probably treated to some extent). The pipe went out into the lake depths but it still was not a good thing to know when you’re water skiing in the area.
